3 Reserve Officers Training Corps
сокр ROTCСистема добровольной военной подготовки с присвоением звания офицера запаса для школьников [junior ROTC] и студентов университетов и колледжей [senior ROTC]. Студенты, посещающие занятия по данной программе, освобождаются от платы за обучение [ tuition] и других учебных расходов, но при этом обязуются по окончании обучения отслужить от 6 месяцев до двух лет в регулярной армии. Ныне каждый род войск осуществляет несколько вариантов таких программ. Система военной подготовки создана в 1916 в соответствии с Законом о национальной обороне [National Defense Act]. Впервые такой курс был введен в Университете Норича [Norwich University]; закон Моррилла 1862 [ Morrill Act] предусматривал военные курсы в "колледжах на дарованной земле" [ land grant college]. Программа Сухопутных сил была расширена путем включения программ ВМС [Naval ROTC (NROTC)] (1926) и ВВС [Air Force ROTC (AFROTC)] (1946) и со временем стала основным источником квалифицированных специалистов для вооруженных сил. В 1960-70-е наблюдался значительный спад участия в программе, особенно во время войны во Вьетнаме [ Vietnam War].
